The new version of WikyBlog has been released as release 1.6 with some improvements in the attachment namespace, improved plugin handling, improved javascript enhancements and new blog preferences. In case you don’t already know, WikyBlog is an open source content management system that combines blogging and wiki into the same system. Basically like a mashup of the two content management concepts. You can read the article I wrote late last year about WikyBlog called ‘A Blog and Wiki Hybrid!’.

MindTouch has what’s called it’s Deki Wiki which is an open source wiki application that is free to download. Or easier to use, however you want to put it.

We have talked about before on this blog about the importance a Wiki can play in the workplace. My personal feelings are that it is essential for every small business owner to have his/her own custom Wiki for the business to document the processes and procedures of the business. Also to allow collaboration of those within the company to help make the business progressively better. I have always used MediaWiki as a solution but i’m looking for a more user friendly solution. That’s why MindTouch and their DekiWiki might be the answer.

“We Are Smarter Than Me” is the first official book written by an online Wiki using online collaboration from multiple contributors from around the world. This is a new trend that is beginning to gain momentum throughout the world online. The book has main authors with a long list of credible contributors on top of it. The book appears to have that “wisdom of crowds” theme to it so I am excited to go purchase it.

This book is a fantastic example of how to use the internet to write your next book. There are many writers out there, who want to write a new book but lack the resources necessary to do it. An online wiki would work perfect for this. And even better than the online tool, is the ability for contributors to help you out. The following is short excerpt about the book:

“In We Are Smater Than Me, you will discover exactly how to use social networking and community in your business, driving better decision-making and greater profitability. The book shares powerful insights and new case studies from product development, manufacturing, marketing, customer service, finance, management, and beyond. You’ll learn which business functions can best be accomplished or supported by communities; how to provide effective moderation, balance structure with independence, manage risk, define success, implement effective metrics, and much more. From tools and processes to culture and leadership, We Are Smarter than Me will help you transform the promise of social networking into a profitable reality.“

I spent time this morning installing and working on Wikyblog, an open source blog and wiki hybrid content management system. I have a lot about it from some of my peers and was interested and taking it for a ride myself. I’m going to say it, WikyBlog is the bomb! It really is. It was easy to setup and install and easy to figure out how to use. There was plenty of documentation on the homepage www.wikyblog.com for me to read through when I had questions. It has an Ajax enhanced tabbed interface that makes moving from page to page very easy and fast. That feature I appreciated. It incorporates easily with Google Maps and has some prepackaged templates right from the original install.

I guess what I love most about WikyBlog is the concept. The idea of having a blog content management system with the ability to treat it like a wiki is fascinating. Blogs and Wiki’s are both great because they encourage collaboration and communication. But each has benefits that the other does not have. By combining the two, you get the great features of both a blog and a wiki. I still have not figured out quite yet how I want to incorporate this tool with anything that i’m doing but i’m sure I will think of something soon. I will let you readers know. For now, check it out by going to www.wikyblog.com and install one for yourself like I did this morning.
