Active Collab is another group that started out Open Source, using open source and it’s community to build their project then making it’s software proprietary. I sure hope this stops one day. It’s ruining open source. Anyways if you go to their website now you will only be sold on their proprietary software, and have now way of downloading their last open source version which was version 0.7.1. So guess what? We found it for you and are letting people download it from this blog. See the following link:

Active Collab Open Source 0.7.1

For this and other old open source projects and their source codes go to our page called Old O.S. Projects.

You guys have given me fantastic feedback on this blog. There has been an outstanding open source support on this whole CATS applicant tracking system debacle! You guys have voiced your opinions and have made your opinions loud and clear and I appreciate you for it. You guys have inspired me to create the “Old O.S. Projects” page where I will now list projects that were at one time open source, and have since gone proprietary. I will post the source code that I am able to obtain. If from there you guys choose to start a source forge project with it is up to you.

I want to do this to help encourage the open source community. We can take this code that was once open source and do things with it. Let’s not allow these proprietary fools to take advantage of all our hard work! Thank you for your support and keep and eye on the Old O.S Projects link located on the main navigation of this blog.

I need your help in tracking down other old open source projects that have turned into proprietary software, similar to this CATS situation. That way we can expose the source code and make it available to everybody! Thanks!

Keep The Open Source Dream Alive!

ActiveCollab, the open source project management software that I have previously discussed in this blog, has recently given a new business venture of mine great new opportunites for success. I have taken on a new project management position with a company called PatientDocs, a company that builds websites and online forms for people in the medical industry. I have setup ActiveCollab to help our team manage all of the new projects for our new clients as they come in. This task is originally why I setup the program.

In setting up the support and customer service infrastructure for PatientDocs, I came across another way ActiveCollab can help me and my business. I created a project called “support” and gave permissions for all members of my custoner service team for that project. The team uses the “messages” feature of collab to submit “tickets”(customer requests). Then tickets are responded too using the discussion thread for each message. It’s Genius! I’m sure i’m not the first who thought of it. But it’s still a great use of a great project management tool.
