Do you remember Muxtape? Muxtape before it was shut down, was a cool web 2.0 service where you could create your own “Mixtape” of your favorite songs and share that profile like you would a social media profile. You could see why it was shutdown, when you have thousands of profiles streaming music. But what about a self-hosted version?
This is what OpenTape is. OpenTape is an open source version of Muxtape. Use it for podcasting, sharing music whatever. The administration interface is so easy to use. And the presentation of the audio is very modern and slick. It was inspired by Muxtape so they designed it to look and feel the same as well. OpenTape is of course built in PHP5 with some cool Mootools interface stuff. There is already a band called Two Shots of Rye using this application to display their music.

This screenshot gives you an idea of what the Admin interface looks like. Very simple. You upload songs which are uploaded to your server. You then can reorder them by simply dragging and dropping. There’s another part of this interface that generates embed code for you to embed your playlist on different places which is my favorite feature.
What Would I Use OpenTape For?
There are many reasons you would use an application like this. The first and most obvious is for the purpose of a band. A band can have a self-hosted website displaying songs to promote an album. Another however is just for personal reasons. You may want to create a page on your blog where you display your favorite songs. This is actually why I want to use OpenTape.
You could also use this to host and display all of your podcasts. I have seen so many ugly looking web pages on the web where the webmaster is trying to display an archive of all his/her podcasts. This would be a super slick interface for that. Something I will definitely be implementing on here very soon.
