WordPress & Joomla may have the big names, and may have more general popularity among most end users. But it appears that Drupal is being used amongst the biggest players on the web! And although WordPress & Joomla have many exciting features and functionality in their own right, Drupal has gained the confidence from some of the web’s most premiere websites to run it’s applications online! That’s a pretty big deal! This post is part 1 of a series of posts where I will be featuring who some of these people are that are using Drupal to power their websites. Today we name 5! Check out my page on Premium Drupal Themes to see how you can make your Drupal site look and function like many of these popular sites with minimal effort.
The popular linux news and information site is completely powered by the Drupal CMS. I got listed on the homepage once from Linux Journal to this blog, and Igot so much traffic pushed my way that my server went down for a couple hours! Linux Journal dispells any myths about Drupals abilities to handle mass traffic!
Funny how the Open Source Initiative themselves chose to use Drupal to power their website over any other cms framework or platform. They must know something that many end users still don’t understand!
3. Ubuntu
One of the great examples of Drupal with a smooth design and content organization. An overall solid Drupal site!
4. SourceForge
Yet another web tech giant using the Drupal cms. We are starting to see a pattern here. These big tech website communities are turning to Drupal and not anything else. Very interesting!
This one is not a huge shocker! The Spread Firefox people usually know what they are doing and makes sense for them to use Drupal with the mass amounts of content and community features that their website requires. Another great example to follow when building your next Drupal website.

I’m missing something – why do you talk up Drupal, yet use WordPress yourself? Myself, I just switched to Drupal from WordPress. Are you planning on switching???

We took you down? SO sorry about that! Yikes!
Thanks for the mention. We at Linux Journal LOVE Drupal. We are big WordPress fans too, but find that Drupal fits the bill quite nicely for our online edition.

Still gave it the thumbs up simply because it’s drupal

These sites are all team centric – let’s see some made by one person? I don’t think one person could actually build a drupal site that looks high end.
This just shows that Drupal works well for corporate enviroments. That’s a small niche in comparison to the mass market. Let’s see a major social networking site that uses Drupal.
How many of these websites actually use unique Drupal powered functionality? I bet all could be build with a CMS like Joomla.
Drupal and other open source projects need to better involve front end designers and user interface experts. It appears all the good designers prefer Joomla and WordPress. I laughed at The Open Source Initiative website.

>>Let’s see a major social networking site that uses Drupal.
How about fastcompany.com?
Or, would that be a ‘corporate environment’ site?
I can’t think of too many large and successful social networking sites that were ‘made by one person’.
I don’t mean to criticise you, but you do seem to be contradicting yourself.
As for ‘unique Drupal powered functionality’ that these sites are using, you only have to visit the case study section to learn about them: http://drupal.org/cases

What I’m meaning is that drupal fits a niche best suited for corporate environments that have money and both developers and designers on hand. Drupal is not an “out of the box, turnkey ” solution that one person could fully implement professionally, in my opinion. You need a developer AND a designer to implement a decent Drupal site. Few people can do both.
In reference to major social networks, most are using custom solutions. I think many enterprise level sites tend to go with custom code over other CMS’s.
Drupal works well for corporate environments – the site you mention may be a corporate website, but these days all major websites are utilizing some degree of social community. Drupal works well for this market. But this is really a small market in comparison to the noob market of resource limited operations.

@ethen: Thanks, I understand you better now.
However, your perception that drupal isn’t a right fit for the noob market (and it’s a perception shared by quite a few) is largely a function of lack of documentation that can walk a noob type person through building sites with drupal. Actually, it would be incorrect to say ‘lack of documentation’. There are literally thousands of handbook pages on http://www.drupal.org/handbooks, but it can be a pain to wade through.
More pertinently, nearly a dozen books on drupal have been published in the last 18 months by Packt Publishing, Apress and, just recently, O’reilly. Most of these books target the beginner and intermediate drupal users. With these books on one’s shelves, it is possible to gain a very high level of drupal expertise within a couple of months.
A significant new book is O’reilly’s ‘Using Drupal’, which is written by a team of drupal experts from Lullabot.com, the guys who have built many top sites including MTV-UK’s community platform.
Here’s an early review of the book:

Drupal does have a rather quick pace of development. To keep up on the edge of development it has to be fairly quick. New releases typically only come out every 9 months or so. This leaves time to update. And, the previous version of drupal is still supported (e.g., both drupal 4.7 and 5 are supported right now). So a drupal version is supported, typically, for a year and a half.

I personally used all the three.
I reason why end users like joomla is the availability of huge number of free modules and extensions. Joomla has hte largest such opensource community on the internet today. The abilty to get a full fledged joomal website running in 2 days. I created a social netowrking site using joomla in 3 days. It is that easy to create website.
Drupal is awesome too, My first ever website was a drupal powered website, it used post gres way back when most people didnt know what it was, drupals only problem is the lack of availability of themes and modules like joomla. Their backend is so cool and if drupal makes a little bit more effect in getting their modules listes as in joomla.org it would be easier and you will see more users.
