Import Your StumbleUpon Bookmarks into Delicious

SEO, Web Tools 3 comments

Alright…check it! I assume we all know the benefits of social bookmarking right? I use StumbleUpon as my default tool for online social bookmarking because it’s just flat out easier to use. I have the Firefox plugin and all I do is click on the little “thumbs up” icon to bookmark a site or page. I prefer that to Del.icio.us where I have to name the bookmark and describe it and all that junk. Plus, “Stumbling” is one of my best resources for finding new cool websites.

I still wanted however to be able to have all my bookmarks in Del.icio.us as well! So because of this need, I needed to find a way to export my StumbleUpon bookmarks and import them to Del.icio.us. After various different attempts I finally found a method that worked best for me! Here is what it is.

1. I found this free online tool someone created that allows you to export all of your StumbleUpon bookmarks into a .php file on your desktop. This is needed because StumbleUpon does not give you the exporting option. It’s called Your StumbleUpon Favorites Importer

2. The tool asks for your StumbleUpon username and the number of bookmarks you wanted exported. I chose 1,200. Hit the button, wait a few minutes, and now you have all of your bookmarks on that page. Save that page onto your desktop. This created a su.php file on my desktop.

3. Now find the Import/Upload option and click on it. Browse for your file and upload it. I selected the option “only import items I don’t already have”. It took a few minutes but work perfectly!!!

**The one problem with Del.icio.us is that all the bookmarks you upload through the upload tool are automatically kept private. So you have to manually go to each bookmark and click the share button. It doesn’t take too much time, unless you are importing 1,200 bookmarks like I did. If anyone knows a way around this please inform!

There you go. You can now keep your Del.icio.us bookmarks account up to date with your StumbleUpon. I’m assuming you can use that same su.php file to import those bookmarks to the various other social bookmarking websites as well.

Thanks! This was very useful. When you’re going to import your bookmarks, simply choose the option of “custom import” and there is the option for import all the bookmarks and make them public.

Delicious does not recognize the file as a legitimate bookmark file and thus won’t upload. Help.

  3. Cool. thanks I need to check this out
