Here’s an interesting concept for you. In the UK people have gathered together around a website www.myfootballclub.co.uk to purchase shares of a professional soccer team. This is an absolutely incredible idea! One of those ideas you never think about until someone else does it and you say “oh yeah…why didn’t I think of that”. Not only do share holders own a piece of the team, they also get to vote (and have their votes count) on what players that team signs and releases. Basically you are treated like a real owner of a soccer team. What a concept huh?
This presents an interesting opportunity here in the United States for our Soccer league as well as women sports leagues such as the WNBA. Struggling leagues are always looking for money and capital to start a franchise and to get it running. People could start by purchasing their own franchises just like myfootballclub.co.uk and you could suddenly see a huge increase in popularity and success in these struggling leagues. I am personally interested in being a part of one myself. If anyone knows of any that are based in the United States please let me know.
