I’ve had the same thoughts for quite some time and my latest project, webr.dk a danish blog about technology and what not, will include as many google webapplications as possible. Why? Because I believe google has a monopoly and as every american firm they will try to benefit the most from it (profitably speaking). So yes, I agree with you that it’s very likely if not completely certain that using google webapps will improve your google ranking.
