1. More Microblogging Themes for WordPress
The Automatic team got this all started when they created the P2 Theme for WordPress. I expect to see more of these created in the GPL in 2010. Which is exciting considering the fact that you can have your own self-hosted Twitter so to speak. Expect to see new functionality to go along with these themes as well, including the ability to better integrate with 3rd party microblogging services like Twitter, Tumblr, and Posterous.

2. More Open Source Apps for the iPhone/iTouch
Yes there are tons of free apps for the iPhone. But we are talking about true Open Source apps that have a community of contributers around them helping the projects grow and adapt. WordPress got this all started when they created the WordPress app for the iPhone, and I expect that more developers will begin this movement.

3. Mozilla’s Social Browser Dominance
There are so many new 3rd party social media desktop applications for services such as Twitter and Facebook. Such notable apps include Tweetdeck, Seesmic, Digsby etc. But Mozilla has been planning with it’s Snowl project, to create an open source solution for this type of application. Mozilla has been quitely developing Snowl, and I expect that they will create new features that will be so innovative that it will bump everyone else out of the market.

4. More Open Source Social Media Apps
Expect to see more open source projects for desktop and web applications in the world of Social Media. Particularly with web applications that interact with social media services. As soon as developers get a hold of this whole Social Media thing and how important it really is, you will see some serious technology advances in Open Source.

5. More Open Source Cloud Applications
These are applications that make “clouds” possible. We are so used to seeing paid and free web applications that integrate with 3rd party applications. Expect more of this code to go Open Source rather than be just a “free service”. There’s much more development power in this.

6. More iPhone Apps for Web Based Open Source Applications
When WordPress decided to create a iPhone application to integrate with a self-hosted WordPress blog, it got a lot of people thinking. I anticipate Drupal and Joomla following suite. But it doesn’t just end with the CMS. What about a Magento iPhone app? What about an Elgg iPhone app? Or OpenOffice? Expect to see these other Open Source projects make moves in this area to make it easier for mobile users to interact with these web applications.
These are my Open Source projections for 2010. Agree with these? Disagree? Interested to see what you guys think. I think overall if these things actually do happen, Open Source as a whole will make a giant leap in the world and change the world of Software even more than it already has.
